How to Use Social Media, Online Video, Mobile Applications, Blogs, News Releases & Viral Marketing to Reach Buyers Directly
In his book “The New Rules of Marketing & PR,” corporate speaker David Meerman Scott covers current digital marketing trends to communicate with customers, increase brand awareness, and amplify sales. Scott discusses how companies have implemented successful marketing campaigns and recommends developing relationships rather than simply advertising brand names, providing many examples from his career.
Scott does a good job in presenting general information to readers who don’t have a lot of experience with digital marketing. However, he fills too many pages with long-winded musings about his family and career and uses too few images to illustrate his points. He also doesn’t provide adequate instructions on how to best use social media with specific guidelines for the major social media platforms such as what to post, how to post, who to follow, links, and comments.
I thought that some of the content was repetitive and was annoyed by his sexist analogy: “Twitter can be compared to the interlude when the girls go to the ladies’ room and talk about the guys, and the guys are discussing the girls while they wait.” Anyone who’s familiar with Twitter knows that men and women exchange business, financial, and political information as well as puns and quips – not locker-room talk.
Excerpts
